Vestigia lucis temporis

In the traditional photography since the 19th century photographers have participated in various historical events by taking photographs as an observer. Many pictures we can see now were even took at the risk of photographers own life. However, photographers have been often criticized as curious onlookers.

In my pictures, by using a flashlight in the dark, I tried to fix only images, which I myself looked at with interest. Under the daylight images exist even though they are not fixed in a picture. But in my work, if images are not fixed to a film, man will see in the dark only the motion of my flashlight. These images are the traces of my motion. I have participated, so to speak, in the frame of my camera. By doing so, I am trying physical experience of a photograph.

The series gVestigia lucis temporish have won the Mainichi-Shinbun Prize of the Ueno-Hikoma-Award 2001. The works will be exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (15. Feb. ~ 23. Feb. 2002).
