History
I have been interested in photography and began to take
pictures from the age of ten. While attending North Gifu
High School, I received instruction in photography from
the late Mr. Tatsuo Kondo, a member of the Nika Association.
In Nihon University I took part in seminars under Prof.
Noriyoshi Sawamoto and Prof. Michio Onuki. In those
days, I belonged to the alpen club Cologne and a universi
ty trekking club. I took pictures of the climbers, who chal
lenged winter mountains, and the people in the countryside.
After getting a position at Sasaki Studio Co., I learned
advertisement photography skills as an assistant of Mr.
Chikao Todoroki and his staff.
Two years later, I accompanied Mr. Kazuyoshi Miyoshi,
who was known as a leading person in photography of
tropical areas, in his travels. I worked as an assistant
photographer in India, Maldives and Iriomote island for a
few months and participated in producing Mr. Miyoshi's
works, "Paradise" and "Paradise Maharaja."
Then in June 1988, I began to work for the magazine,
"AERA," as a Photojournalist, reporting on some Asian
countries as China and Korea. At the same time, I person
ally traveled to Shanghai for more photography. Also I
photographed at some homes for the aged. While taking
pictures of the old people, who have many problems with
health and so on, I got more interested in issues regarding
social welfare and discrimination. After I became free-
lance photographer, I also got to take part as a volunteer
worker helping out in activities such as outdoor camping
conducted by Japan Enviromental Welfare Association,
motor racing conducted by Japan Sports Association for
the Disabled, and AIDS-related activities. I think that the
pictures I took, which capture people and their circum
stances that are hidden from society, call the attention of
the readers and enable them to focus on social problems.
In 1993, one of the pictures I took in the Sun Village
Shinsei-en (in Gifu Prefecture) was chosen as one of the
best 100 competing for The John Kobal Photographic
Portait Award, organized by "Independant," a reputable
magazine in England. The winning photograph with the
title, "Nursing Home For The Aged," was exhibited at
the Angela Flowers Gallery in Soho of London for a month
from June 1993.
With my work "Taboo of Japan," which is a reconstruc
tion of my exhibit in a group exhibition called "Naked Bat"
(February1995) and some other new photographs, I was
accepted in August 1995 as one of the 27 exhibitors in the
annual competition, "Enlightenment," at the Photographers
Gallery, supported by "The Times," one of the most repu
table magazines in England.
