The Botanical Gardens Of The World
A major theme in my work is an exploration of mankind's relationship with nature. It is our tendency as human beings to try to control and limit our experience of the world around us. If we did not do so, by putting a filter over our perceptions of our environment, we would be overwhelmed by a flood of sensory stimulation from the natural world.
This tendency of ours to try to put frames around our perception of our surroundings (through making concepts and images) reaches out into the world of nature to the extent that we try to master and control our environment. This tendency may be necessary for our survival. It may also be the hand that brings our destruction.
The botanical garden is the setting I choose to explore the perceptual process of experiencing nature. As I photograph the old botanical gardens of the world I see how the wind and rain, heat and cold have a final say on the structures that we humans build. In this way nature reveals our mortality.
The old gardens are full of such metaphors. The gardens are also rich with lush green paths that open doors of perception to a world of beauty that awakens our own inner garden.
