Basic of Asian Movies 2

The next basic is the amount of films made per year. Each countries' information is recorded in the 'UNESCO cultural yearbook' from UNESCO. (Japanese edition is published from draught.) When mentioning Peking and Mongol, you think they are the developing film producing nations, but let's say we'll trust the data. When talking of the 'unknown' theres a possibility that the information has been neglected. Also, the annual yearbook of variety or the english publication of the international film guide has information of all films of all countries. This data is different from the data added by the author. Let's have a look at the changes in the last 10 years...
At first we notice the countries that have suddenly reduced the amount of movies. Is this an influence of TV, video and mass media?? Indonesia is an example of completely this. When walking in a high class suburb of Jakarta, you are confronted by a scenery of erect huge antennas.
  1. Satellite broadcast
  2. US movies on video
  3. US movies in the cinema
  4. Earthwave TV
  5. Local movies in the cinema
Like the many new TV programmes starting up each year, cinemas have segregation too! It is pretty standard that US movies run for a long time in nice cinemas and local movies are shown in old cinemas lasting for 2 or 3 days. This is also the result of the International film organisation.

On the other hand, compared with english films in India and Phillipines etc (us films), the local films are much more popular. But with the US style of producers, market research, studio systems, star systems etc are appearing more and more. 'Asia Hollywood' is here. Cinemas that have action or comedy movies are very popular. When walking in Manilla Streets, my friend said "aah runner" - I thought there must have been a marathon on, but it was just that a good film was showing at both A cinema and B cinema. The same picture was shown on both cinemas with 30 minutes between showings. Both cinemas were full houses.

In China too, new works are constantly being made, and political data information is shown as well. Japan is like India being a great movie making country of Asia. 70-80 general films are made per year, the rest being blue movies. However we can't go past India. In one year 838 films!! I'd like to discuss this more in the next report.
